Summer School Registration Gr. 6-8 closes June 18.

Continuing Education Services is pleased to offer the following two summer school programs for current year grade 6, 7 and 8 students. Due to the pandemic, all programs will be offered remotely.

Registration, through my Pathway Planner, is now open and closes June 18, 2021. Spaces are limited and students are encouraged to register early.

Elementary Summer School Grade 6, 7 and 8 (Literacy & Numeracy) Program

This 15-day program is designed to reinforce the curriculum for students who are performing below the provincial standard. The program will operate from July 5 to July 23, 2021 (8:45 am – 3:25 pm).

 Students must register in the program for their current school grade as this is not an acceleration program. For example, a grade 7 student would register for the grade 7 program as it reinforces grade 7 content.  

 The following programs will be offered:

·       Language and Math reinforcement for students who may or may not have an Individual Education Plan (IEP)

·       English Language Learner (ELL) Language for students who are ELL Stage 1 or 2 learners. The focus is on reading, writing and speaking

Grade 8 Summer Reach Ahead

This program provides an opportunity for students to earn a high school credit. These 18 day acceleration courses start July 7 and end July 30. Students register directly through MyPathwayPlanner and they are located in the Remote Secondary School offerings.

The following courses will be offered:

·       Discovering the Workplace (GLD2O). The type of student for whom this course is specifically designed:

o   would benefit from a gradual transition into high school;
            o   may experience some challenges in credit acquisition in grade 9 or 10;
            o   would benefit from focused support in order to improve academic performance;

o  may be disconnected from school and/or peers;
            o   has experienced some challenges with regular school attendance.

·        International Languages (Farsi, Simplified Mandarin and Spanish). Please note that prerequisites are not required. Should the student wish to continue studying a language they would register for the Fall International and Indigenous Languages program in the next level.

Dear families, 

It is hard to sum up this past school year; it truly has been a year like no other. Many of our students have been transitioning between virtual and in-person learning. Others have spent the full year learning virtually as part of our Elementary and Secondary Virtual Schools. Whatever option you have chosen, this year has been challenging and has asked a lot of all of us – students, families, staff members and community partners. We have had to be flexible and adaptable in how we learn, teach and work. We have had to be diligent in learning new routines and adhering to public health measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. And, we have had to pay more attention than ever to supporting mental health and well-being during this challenging time. 

This pandemic has affected different families in different ways, and I want to thank you for your patience, support and resiliency throughout this challenging year. I also want to take this opportunity to remind you that resources are available on the Board website, including community resources, mental health supports, tips and resources to support online learning, and tips for speaking with your child about COVID-19. These resources will continue to be available throughout the summer. 

Despite the challenges this year, we have seen incredible examples of student learning and achievement. I am incredibly proud of the determination, resilience, creativity and perseverance demonstrated by our students. I want to wish a very special congratulations to the graduating class of 2021. This is an important milestone and while we are all disappointed that we are unable to celebrate in person as we would have hoped, we look forward to honouring our graduates virtually. Schools are working hard to make their virtual graduation celebrations a very special occasion. We are very proud of our graduates and wish you all the very best in the next chapter of your journey.

I also want to acknowledge the hard work of our educators and staff members who have maintained a focus on supporting students while navigating the challenges of the past year. Our staff members have shown a true commitment to their own learning in the service of our students, and have been participating in webinars, online training modules and other professional learning opportunities throughout the school year to enhance their own practices.  

Earlier this spring, we launched the Board’s Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy, with the goal to “achieve racial equity in YRDSB schools for Black students and staff.” The strategy was co-developed by York Region Black community leaders, YRDSB staff and in consultation with students. Thank you to everyone who supported this work and participated in the launch. We look forward to continuing this essential work. 

The Board is also preparing for the 2022 Municipal Election by undertaking a review of school board trustee electoral areas. The boundaries of the areas the trustees represent change over time due to population growth and changes in student numbers. We are committed to ensuring that, as the region’s population changes, electoral areas continue to reflect the communities we serve. Public input is important to the Board of Trustees during the electoral area review. Throughout the process there will be a number of ways for you to learn more about the review and to provide input. Information about the Trustee Determination and Distribution is available on the Board website.

As was communicated to families in May, we are looking ahead to the 2021-2022 school year. Our goal is to create a learning model within the provincial funding allocation that meets public health requirements and is centred on the safety and well-being of our students and staff members. To help meet this goal, we are planning to implement a hybrid model of learning for elementary and secondary schools, a model several other school boards have been using during this current school year. Through this model, families will continue to have the ability to opt for in-person or remote learning, and placement for all students will be in their home school. I know there are many questions about what this will look like and what to expect in September. The Board continues to provide as much information as possible and has shared some frequently asked questions on the Board website about the model change for 2021-2022, this page will continue to be updated. As planning continues and information becomes available, we will provide regular updates to families. Please know that health and safety of our students, staff and families remains our top priority. As we go into the summer months, I want to thank you once again for your support over the past year, and to wish you all a safe, healthy and enjoyable summer. 

As the school year comes to a close, I want to wish you and your families a safe, healthy and happy summer. I look forward to a time when we can welcome your children back into our schools again. We know that families have questions about what the return to school will look like. We will continue to share information with you as it becomes available. In the meantime, we encourage you to continue following public health guidelines and to stay connected. 

YRDSB Student and Family Surveys

We (YRDSB) will be inviting parents/guardians to participate in the 2020-21 YRDSB Student and Family Surveys between May 26 and June 18. 

All students in Grades 7-12 will be invited to participate in the Student Survey. Families of students in Grades K-12 will be invited to complete the Family Survey. Surveys will be available online and will take about 15-20 minutes to complete.

The surveys will provide the Board and our schools with valuable information about the learning experiences of students and families this year. Results will be used to guide Board and school planning to support student achievement and well-being.

As our first partners in education, we value input from families and encourage parents/guardians to complete the survey. The information provided will be anonymous, considered confidential and kept in strict accordance with all relevant legislation. Career Discovery Expo: Dream Big York May 11 Gr. 7-12

Students in grades 7 – 12 and their parents/guardians are invited to attend the Career Discovery Expo: Dream Big York on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 from 6:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. ET. 

This FREE event provides students and their families the opportunity to explore a wide range of career paths. 

The Career Discovery Expo: Dream Big York will feature:

  • Dream Maker Panel: Women from various industries share their stories and inspire young women.
  • Employer Spotlight: Employers share their “look fors” when hiring new employees and ways to gain experience early.
  • Pathway Spotlight: College, University and OYAP representatives share the different pathway programs available, scholarships, courses etc.

Celebrating Nawruz-activities and events

For many of us, March 20th signifies the beginning of the Spring season and a chance to look
forward to warmer weather. For many of our families from countries like Iran, Afghanistan, the Kurdish regions
of Iraq, Turkey and Syria, throughout Central Asia and many more – The first day of spring is a New
Year’s Festivity, also known as Nowruz (pronounced NO-ruz). While specific traditions vary from
country to country, as different cultures add their own elements, the central theme is the same: a
celebration of spring and a time for rebirth and renewal.
In recognition of Nowruz, students and parents/guardians are invited to participate in free activities
during the month of March which focus on aspects of Nowruz traditions celebrated by different

Pink Shirt Day Feb. 24 Let’s Take a Stand Against Bullying!

PINK SHIRT DAY- FEBRUARY 24- Pink Shirt Day is a globally recognized day in support of anti-bullying, up-standing behaviour and simple acts of kindness. On February 24, 2021, we are encouraged to practice kindness and wear pink to show that we do not tolerate any form of bullying.

Term 1 Report Card Info

Dear Henderson families:

Your child’s Term One Elementary Report Card will be distributed electronically with instructions on how to access the report between February 18 – 23, using their GAPPS accounts.  

The Elementary Report Card provides you with information about your child’s achievement of the curriculum expectations across subject areas. The report card grade represents a student’s achievement of overall curriculum expectations, as demonstrated to this point in time.

For all Reports, our board will include the following statement: “This reporting period reflects learning that has occurred in a modified learning environment, as required by the provincial public health guidelines.” Overall, these reports provide you information about your child’s achievement during the first term. 

We hope that this report will encourage your child while supporting conversations about learning at home. 

Inclement Weather in YRDSB

Dear families, 

This year, we are doing many things differently in our schools to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and support the health and safety of our students, staff members and families. As we enter the colder months, we have also reviewed what it will look like when inclement weather days are declared and school transportation is cancelled. 

We usually try to keep schools open as much as possible, and in previous years, schools have remained open when school transportation is cancelled. This year, however, given the importance of adhering to our health and safety guidelines, we have made the decision to close schools to students when an inclement weather day is declared and school transportation is cancelled. Please do not send your child to school when an inclement weather day is declared. We are unable to guarantee appropriate coverage for students on inclement weather days when school transportation is closed and classes cannot be combined. 

Please take the time to make plans in the event of an inclement weather day school closure. Please note that before and after care programs will not be operating on inclement weather days. For on-site, full-day child care, please confirm with your childcare operator. We recognize that this may be an inconvenience for some families. This decision was not made lightly and made to prioritize the health and safety of students, staff members and families. 

There are also rare occasions when school transportation is cancelled due to extreme cold weather and not road conditions, and schools will remain open for students. 

Student learning will continue:

  • Students attending elementary school in person will be provided with learning activities for the day through their Google classroom and teachers will be available online to support students. 
  • Students attending secondary school in person will shift to virtual learning for all of their classes for the day. 
  • Elementary and secondary virtual schools will operate as normal. 

Communication to families

Decisions about school transportation and school closures will be made as early as possible and no later than 6:00 a.m. We will do our best to notify families in advance. Our priority continues to be the safety of our students, staff members and families. If you have any questions, please speak with your school principal.
